Essential Standards Requirement

A candidate for admission must be able to demonstrate acceptable levels of independence, cognitive skills and physical aptitude to be able to perform successfully at the College and in the Massage Therapy profession. These areas of proficiency include, but are not limited to observation skills, motor skills, communication skills, analytical skills, and emotional maturity. All Essential requirements are considered minimal standards for admission, progression and graduation from the College.

Technology:
Candidates must demonstrate computer literacy and be capable of adapting to new trends in technology that may be needed for success in the program.

Observation:
The functional use of vision, touch and olfactory senses are necessary for the candidate to be able to accurately observe a patient. Observation skills must be proficient to perform at a distance and close at hand.

Motor:
The candidate must possess adequate mobility, strength and equilibrium to safely practice and treat patients. Coordination of both fine and gross motor skills is required to accurately diagnosis patients and to safely administer many clinical techniques.

Communication:

In the diagnosis and treatment of patients it is necessary to elicit and relay information accurately. A candidate must be able to speak, hear, read and write effectively in order to efficiently be accommodated at the College with an auxiliary aid or intermediary that provides a selective function, cognitive support or medical knowledge. Aids and Intermediaries also may not substitute for essential clinical skills, or supplement clinical judgment. Any accommodations made must provide a means of helping the student meet the standards rather than circumvent them. Students who are accepted into the program are required to sign a document indicating that they understand the Essential Standards, as well as requests for any specific reasonable accommodations to complete the curriculum. Requests for accommodations are evaluated on an individual basis and students must provide current supporting diagnostic test results and professional prescriptions as requested by the College for evaluation
